About Duquesne:

Duquesne is a city located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,332. The borough of Duquesne was settled in 1885. Duquesne was incorporated in 1891. Population in 1900, 9,036; in 1910, 15,727; in 1914 (US estimate), 18,576; in 1920, 19,011; and in 1940, 20, 693. A productive steel mill was the heart and soul of Duquesne during its brightest moments, but the municipality has deteriorated since 1950. Petty crimes perpetrated by small-time hoodlums were common for awhile, circa 1970 to 2000, but a cooling-off became noticeable after 2000. According to the McKeesport Daily News, Duquesne has the worst performing schools in the state of Pennsylvania.

Duquesne Geography:

Duquesne is located at 40°22'12" North, 79°51'3" West (40.369969, -79.850957). Duquesne is nestled along the Monongahela approximately 12 miles (c 19 km) south of Pittsburgh.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 km2 (2.0 mi2). 4.7 km2 (1.8 mi2) of it is land and 0.6 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 10.84% water.

Duquesne Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,332 people, 3,179 households, and 1,853 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,555.4/km2 (4,035.0/mi2). There are 3,768 housing units at an average density of 799.4/km2 (2,073.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 48.92% White, 47.75% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,179 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.8% are married couples living together, 27.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 80.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,766, and the median income for a family is $25,898. Males have a median income of $25,046 versus $22,272 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,067. 34.7% of the population and 31.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 52.9% of those under the age of 18 and 19.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
